Itinerary

Day 0

Arrive in Nkob (accessible by CTM bus), accommodation and dinner included

Day 1

Leave early by transport van, 1.5 hours drive into the mountains. The hike today starts with a long and fairly steep ascent over rocky ground, lunch in a lush almond garden. Short hike in the afternoon to the camp spot, surrounded by mountains on 3 sides.

Day 2

Today will be long! The day starts with the crossing of 3 mountain passes with steep inclines and declines, so make sure to have a good breakfast. This is followed by a long and slow decline. Keep your eyes open for all the little gardens along the way.

After lunch, you will reach the summit of the highest mountain of the area at ca. 2700m. From here, the surroundings change their looks, flowers and bushes are different, and the rocks change colour too. You’ll follow a long valley for a few hours, followed by a moderate incline and then a short,t steep decline to the camp location for today. You will overlook the valley of Igli and can see a big “rock” that looks like an elephant.

Day 3

Decline into the valley, visit the little shop and follow the valley for a few hours. If you are lucky, there is a local nomad family that invites you for tea. From here, it is only a short way over a small hill into the hidden valley where you camp for the night. A family built a couple of houses here and has a nice garden. Spend the afternoon making friends with their donkey, climbing the surrounding mountains for spectacular views or just relaxing.

Day 4

Today hiking is short and easy. Follow some valleys and canyons on good mule paths. You’ll walk past the Bab ‘n Ali pinnacles, make sure to ask Mohammed for the stories surrounding these. The last bit of trail follows a river with super colourful stones and beautiful Oleander bushes. The tour ends by the road back to Nkob in a small cafe. Enjoy a coffee and a fresh orange juice before driving back to town.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I have to be?

This hike requires a good level of fitness, as there is a lot of altitude gain and loss every day following narrow goat paths. The hike takes 4-7 hours per day with 1 or 2 breaks.

What will the temperatures be like?

In times of climate change, this question is difficult to answer. Generally speaking, it is cool up in the mountains, even when it is 30 degrees in Nkob.

What kind of equipment do I need?

In general, we recommend good hiking boots, hiking poles (great for reducing swelling in the hands), long-sleeved/long-legged lightweight clothing with a few warm layers and sun protection.

What kind of people hike with BAT?

Our hikes attract active and adventurous people of all ages. People who enjoy being outdoors and don’t mind a basic level of comfort.

What happens after I book?

To confirm your booking, we require your full name, a few other infos and a deposit of 25% of the total trip price. The remaining balance is due 1 month before the trip.

Can I extend my trip?

Yes! We can design an extension that suits your travel style and budget.

Do I need insurance?

We strongly recommend that you take out at least good travel health insurance. Not just for our trip, but for all trips in Morocco and around the world. Make sure that it covers repatriation to your home country in the event of serious problems so that you can be treated at home.

Also consider taking out travel cancellation insurance in case you fall ill or are injured immediately before your trip and have to cancel.

What about snakes and scorpions?

Snakes and scorpions are very rare and mainly active during the summer months. Nevertheless, it is advisable to always wear shoes (or at least flip-flops). And be careful when lifting stones, as scorpions may be hiding underneath them.

Where/how do we go to the toilet?

We don’t bring a toilet with us on our hikes, so you’ll have to use the big toilet. Small business is easy, you just hide behind a dune or a bush. For big business, you first dig a hole and then cover it with soil or stones. We collect all toilet paper in plastic bags so that we can dispose of it properly when we return to the city.
