Many of our guests ask us what is best to wear in the desert. Of course, this depends very much on the season in which you visit. In winter, it can get very cold after sunset. In April, you usually don’t even need a blanket to sleep.
You don’t need any special clothing for a simple overnight stay in one of the many camps in Morocco. However, if you are riding there on a camel, you should wear long trousers, as the saddles can be very uncomfortable. You should also bear in mind that you will be travelling for 1-1.5 hours in the blazing sun, so you should cover your shoulders and arms and buy a turban beforehand or at least wear a sun hat/cap.
For our hiking and trekking tours, we recommend long, thin trousers and tops, especially for sun protection, as it is easy to underestimate how much sun the sand reflects. However, T-shirts and hiking shorts are generally fine on most routes. Only when we visit nomads do we insist on long trousers and loose-fitting tops, as they live a very secluded and conservative lifestyle.
We recommend boots that cover at least the ankles, as otherwise you will get a lot of sand in your shoes. Some people like to walk in sandals with socks in the sand, but I personally get blisters from that. You should always wear at least flip-flops in the camp, not least as protection against scorpions. Mesh trainers tend to fill up with sand, which then presses on your feet from all sides and is impossible to remove from the material.
In the colder months, you should also bring a warm, windproof jacket and possibly a thin rain jacket. Thermal underwear is also recommended for the evenings, and a hat and possibly even gloves won’t hurt either.
