Desert Hiking and Camel Trekking

“Imagine waking up to total silence, the first rays of sunlight peaking over the sand dunes next to your tent. After a simple breakfast of fresh bread, olives and tea, you will walk through landscapes that most people will never set their eyes on. Sand dunes, dried up river beds and bare mountains showing layers that are millions of years old.”

Our desert hikes are a great way to get to know the desert, with its beautiful landscapes, plants and animals, and of course, the people who live here. If you’re thinking, ‘But a week of hiking in the sand is totally exhausting,’ you’re right! And that’s not what we do. The desert is so much more than sand dunes. We traverse diverse, varied landscapes, including sand dunes, but not only.

We have a few “standard hikes”, but we are happy to tailor them to your wishes. Tours of up to 3 days do not involve camels; meals and overnight stays are in guesthouses or in tents in the dunes next to them. For tours of 4 days or more, we do camel trekking and are completely self-sufficient.

Why should you book with Berber Adventure Tours?

• We offer private desert hikes on routes that no one else has in their program.
• You can design your tour however you want; we offer maximum flexibility.
• We plan according to your wishes or tell you why something is not possible. No “yes, yes, no problem”, and then everything turns out differently than expected.
•You will be accompanied on the desert hike by either Hassan or Eva.
• If available, we will book accommodations for you that we have visited ourselves. The city and hiking guides we book for you, we have most likely booked and tested for a tour ourselves.

What can you expect?

In general, the days on our multi-day camel trekking tours look like this:

We set off in the morning after breakfast, enjoy lunch under a tree, and hike a little further in the afternoon. We set up camp and you have free time to enjoy the sunset in the evening and explore the surroundings of the campsite. Depending on the weather conditions, there may be a campfire in the evening to bake fresh bread for dinner/breakfast. Everyone helps with setting up and taking down the camp and loading the camels in the morning. The camels carry our luggage, which means you only have to carry a daypack with water and snacks.

You will gain unique insights into the Amazigh (Berber) culture, learn how to bake bread in the sand and how to find wells in the middle of nowhere.

There will probably be no phone reception for most of the trip, making this the perfect tour for anyone looking to disconnect from the digital world.

You will be surprised at how quickly you will be completely relaxed and how much more you will enjoy the rugged nature that surrounds you. You will be amazed at how many animals live in the desert, how many shapes and colours the stones have and how many stars you can see at night.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I have to be?

For our level 2 and 2-3 hikes, you should generally be an active person. The terrain varies between sand, rocky plains and some smaller mountains. We will hike between 3-6 hours per day with 1 or 2 breaks.

Good fitness is required for the camel trekking tours. The daily stages are between 4-8 hours with 1-2 breaks.

It also requires a certain amount of mental strength to be out of reach for long periods of time with limited resources.

What will the temperatures be like?

In times of climate change, this question is difficult to answer. We hope for daytime temperatures between 25-30°C in October and March, 20-25°C in November and February, and 15-20°C in December and January. Night-time temperatures can drop close to freezing point in the winter months.

What kind of equipment do I need?

For camel trekking tours, we will send you a detailed packing list after booking. In general, however, we recommend good hiking boots, a sleeping bag, hiking poles (good for reducing swelling in the hands), long-sleeved/long-legged lightweight clothing and sunscreen. For short tours, only good shoes and sunscreen are necessary.

How do I get to the starting point?

Depending on which tour you have booked, you will either be picked up in Marrakesh or you will have to make your own way to Merzouga or Zagora. There are several options for this. The Supratours bus runs from Marrakech to Zagora and Merzouga and from Fes to Merzouga. CTM runs from Marrakech to Zagora. Ryanair flies several times a week from Marrakech to Errachidia, and RAM offers a daily flight from Casablanca to Errachidia. From there, you can continue by taxi or we can organise a transfer.

What kind of people hike with BAT?

Our hikes attract active and adventurous people of all ages. People who enjoy being outdoors and don’t mind a basic level of comfort. The desert offers plenty of space, so our trips are also suitable for people who normally travel individually or alone, as there are plenty of opportunities to hike away from the others and enjoy the solitude.

What happens after I book?

To confirm your booking, we require your full name, a few other infos and a deposit of 25% of the total trip price. The remaining balance is due 1 month before the trip.

Can I extend my trip?

Yes! We can design an extension that suits your travel style and budget.

Do I need insurance?

We strongly recommend that you take out at least good travel health insurance. Not just for our trip, but for all trips in Morocco and around the world. Make sure that it covers repatriation to your home country in the event of serious problems so that you can be treated at home.

Also consider taking out travel cancellation insurance in case you fall ill or are injured immediately before your trip and have to cancel.

What about snakes and scorpions?

Snakes and scorpions are very rare and mainly active during the summer months. Nevertheless, it is advisable to always wear shoes (or at least flip-flops) when walking on sand. And be careful when lifting stones, as scorpions may be hiding underneath them.

Where/how do we go to the toilet?

We don’t bring a toilet with us on our hikes, so you’ll have to use the big toilet. Small business is easy, you just hide behind a dune or a bush. For big business, you first dig a hole and then cover it with sand, soil or stones. We collect all toilet paper in plastic bags so that we can dispose of it properly when we return to the city.

Our desert tour with Eva and Hassan was the highlight of our two-week trip to Morocco. The two of them took us and our two children (15 and 8) on a two-day hiking tour through remote and beautiful desert landscapes in the Merzouga region. It was fantastic all around! The advance planning via email was straightforward and professional, and Eva's suggestions were just right for us. Once we arrived, we received a warm welcome and immediately felt in good hands. Because of the heat and potentially tired children's legs, we hiked in the mornings and spent the afternoons in the sand dunes and visiting a nomadic family. The children loved that Eva could tell them so much in German about the nature, the people, and the customs, and Hassan, who is from Merzouga, made sure everything ran smoothly: tents for the night in the dunes, a friendly and personable driver with a good off-road vehicle, and fresh vegetables for the best tagine I've eaten on this vacation. Both hikes were truly amazing and very varied, something we didn't expect in the desert. We also really enjoyed the accommodations that Berber Adventure Tours booked for us. Thank you, Eva and Hassan, for the fantastic time! We wholeheartedly recommend a tour with you!

Our 4 day Merzouga desert tour was incredible. The changing landscapes, the great colors, the delicious food, the people with their kindness and warmth...everything was exactly as we had hoped. And above all, it was authentic.
That's why we came up with Eva and Hassan. You made everything that was important to us possible. Everything had to be real and original and was perfectly organized.
We were able to take so many impressions with us and create unforgettable memories.
A wonderful adventure. We thank you for this from the bottom of our hearts. ????????

My second tour with Berber Adventure Tours went to the north of Morocco with Eva.
I really wanted to have Eva with me because I didn't think I could travel alone as a woman. And so it was just perfect. She took care of everything organizational (accommodation, drivers, guides, activities). We were then able to just let ourselves go on the tour. We got along really well. It felt like I was traveling with a friend and there was always someone there to talk to.
The tour lasted a total of 8 days, with several stops, from Fes via Chefchaouen to Tangier.
We experienced a lot: from classic sightseeing, food tours, cooking classes, hiking in the mountains to a leisurely stroll, strolling through the market and enjoying the atmosphere in the streets/cafés, it was all there. Of course we also ate a lot and delicious food, from sweet to savory. And there were the best fresh juices and milkshakes of my life.
I can't even decide which was my favorite food or my favorite place because every place was special to me. Everything always had its own colors and its own magic.
I'm looking forward to traveling with Eva again in the future and exploring other areas of Morocco.

My third trip with BAT was with Hassan and the crew for 9 days in the desert in and around Erg Chigaga.
Since I already knew the crew from the last hike, I had no concerns about starting this trip all by myself as a woman traveling alone.
It was wonderful to hike in the silence of the desert, to be alone with my thoughts, to enjoy the varied vegetation. There was so much exciting to see and experience. An abandoned oasis, lots of animals and fossils.
We also met nomads on the way again. And above all, there were sand dunes that took your breath away. Beautiful sunsets, starry skies and even a shooting star. Baking bread in the sand.
I was so happy again that I can hardly put it into words. I love the food our chef prepared and was well looked after and protected throughout the day. I didn't miss anything.
Eating together was always a highlight and there was a lot of laughter. It felt like “coming home” again and the crew became family to me.
It was particularly exciting when a male ostrich chased us because he wanted to protect his nest. But even then the crew kept a cool head and knew what to do.
Eva's suggestion to spend another night in Zagora (at the end of the tour) in order to arrive again, process impressions and not be abruptly taken away from this beauty of Morocco was exactly the right thing. Take a leisurely stroll through the streets and experience and enjoy Moroccan life.

I would like to thank Hassan and the crew from the bottom of my heart for these unforgettable and special experiences! It won't be the last tour together.

My wife and I had a wonderful trip into the Sahara organized by Eva and Hassan. Eva's communication was excellent and she proved to be friendly and knowledgeable. They gave us all the information we needed to prepare for our hike into the desert. We had great time walking through the dunes, camping under the stars and enjoying amazing meals prepared by our cook who was even able to accommodate my wife (she is vegan) which is a tall task in Morocco! Hassan shared his extensive knowledge of the area and made us feel at ease while we explored the beautiful nature of the Sahara. A true highlight was staying overnight with a local Berber family and their kindness and hospitality was outstanding, truely a unique opportunity to see how others live and make connection, the reason so many of us travel in the first place. If you are looking to explore the beauty of Morocco, we highly recommend them. Happy travels!

Eva put together a very individual tour for us. Everything was perfect, from the hotel in Merzouga to the luxury camp in the desert to the hotel in Errachidia. Drivers were nice and reliable. I can highly recommend this agency for an unforgettable trip to the desert and the Berbers.

We had an amazing three-day trek with Berber Adventure Tours in Merzouga. Our guide, Eva, was enthusiastic, full of stories, and had a lot of experience. It was also nice that Hassan joined us despite the Ramadan.
The landscape was absolutely stunning, offering a lot of variety throughout the journey. The hikes were easy and not too long, which made them very enjoyable. However, for very sporty hikers, they might feel a bit short. The program was flexible, allowing for adjustments along the way to match our pace and interests.

The accommodation was basic but comfortable, and the food was absolutely delicious. The route they planned for us was well thought out, allowing us to experience different types of desert landscapes. On the last day, they also incorporated some cultural experiences.

The only minor downside was that we sometimes felt a bit like "paying guests," as tips and extras were not included and there was a slight sense of expectation around them.

Overall, it was a well-organized and beautiful adventure—highly recommended for anyone wanting to explore the Moroccan desert in a comfortable and authentic way!

We had a wonderful time in Morocco. The arrangements and organizations in preparation for our trip were absolutely great and super reliable. If you are planning a trip to Morocco and want to get to know the people and the country individually and not just on the usual tourist routes, you are in the very best hands with Eva and Hassan. Eva planned and organized a perfect 11-day tour for us. There was a lot to admire and experience and we were able to meet so many great people. Dear Eva, dear Hassan - we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this unforgettable, wonderful trip.

I really enjoyed the desert tour organized by Berber Adventure Tours. The company listened to our needs and wants and tailored the itinerary to us, even making on-the-fly changes around the hikes and sleeping arrangements. Our guide Hassan spoke perfect English (and apparently French and Arabic and Berber), was full of information about the flora and fauna, and was a lot of fun to hang out with (he's great with a frisbee, not so bad at cards either!). The desert was really gorgeous. I loved the variety of terrain in the selected hikes, and the meals and side trips to local families and villages, giving me a sense of the culture of the place. Relatedly, I really appreciated the value the company placed on the environment and economic prosperity of the region. I am especially upset with the proliferation of dune-destroying quad bikes. While I'm sure Berber Adventure Tours would accommodate you if you want to ride one, they specialize in leave-only-footprints take-only-pictures type tours that emphasize the natural peace and quiet and beauty and provide the local people with some of the tourist income through meals and tips.

We did a 5-day tour with Berber Adventures in January 2025, which took us from Marrakesh to Merzouga and back again. We had never visited Morocco before, so to plan our trip we sent a fairly general email to Eva and Hassan explaining that we would like to hike and get to know the local culture in a respectful way. They sent us a detailed proposal within 24 hours that corresponded perfectly to what we wanted. The execution of the proposal was also flawless. The hotels were comfortable and the activities were fun (hikes, camel ride, dinner with a local family, etc). We particularly appreciated the driver/guide that Eva and Hassan linked us up with (Aziz), who was punctual and courteous, and took road safety very seriously. He also had many interesting things to show us and to tell us (in excellent English).
